New Delhi: Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has described the controversy over the inclusion of her name in the electoral roll as politically motivated, rejecting allegations that her name was added to the voter list before she acquired Indian citizenship.
The case relates to claims that Sonia Gandhi’s name was included in the voter list in 1980, nearly three years before she obtained Indian citizenship. Based on these allegations, a petition was filed seeking the registration of an FIR against her.
However, a magistrate court refused to order the registration of an FIR in the matter. The order was passed by Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia, who found no grounds to proceed with the complaint at that stage.
Challenging this decision, petitioner Vikas Tripathi has now approached a higher court, questioning the magistrate’s refusal to direct the police to file an FIR.
Reacting to the development, Sonia Gandhi said the issue was being raised with political intent, accusing her opponents of misusing legal processes to target her. She maintained that the allegations were baseless and aimed at creating controversy rather than seeking justice.
The case has once again brought political attention to Sonia Gandhi’s citizenship history, an issue that has surfaced repeatedly in public discourse over the years.
