New Delhi: The number of Indian students travelling abroad for higher education has steadily declined over the past three years, according to data shared by the Ministry of Education in response to a written question in Rajya Sabha.
According to Global Mirror, information provided by Indian Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar to the house said, over 9.08 lakh Indians went overseas for studies in 2023, a figure that fell to 7.7 lakh in 2024 and further to 6.26 lakh in 2025. The data is based on records from the Indian Home Ministry’s Bureau of Immigration (BoI) for the period 2023 to 2025.
Majumdar said that studying abroad is a matter of personal choice, influenced by factors such as affordability, access to loans, aptitude for specific fields, and exposure to foreign societies.
