New Delhi: Indian police resorted to brute force against protesting students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, injuring several and detaining over a dozen.
According to Global Mirror, at least 14 students were detained while attempting to march towards the Indian Ministry of Education to demand the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit over her “casteist” remarks in a recent interview. Among those detained were two office-bearers of the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU).
Police used lathis and force to stop the students outside the campus, blocking their march and dispersing the protesters. Protesters were calling for a campus free from institutional casteism and opposition to Brahmanical RSS and BJP Hindutva influence.
